2019 New Year’s Resolutions: Home Edition

January 10, 2019

Happy New Year, 2019 with confetti

We know you don’t need another article about the many New Year’s Resolutions you should be making for 2019. We’ve seen them all: get to the gym (or hire your own personal trainer at One), learn how to meal prep, call your mother more. But how often do we talk about New Year’s Resolutions for new homeowners? Your home is your happy place, so let’s look at some helpful homeowner tips to spruce it up in 2019. Whether it’s decluttering, trying new design trends, or having more dinner guests, this year is sure to be the year of making your house a home.

New Year’s Resolution #1: Declutter the Pantry

If your New Year’s Resolution is to lose a few extra pounds, decluttering the pantry can be a two-fold goal. Not only will you be clearing up more space, but you’ll also be getting rid of some unhealthy snacks. Spend a Saturday afternoon going through your pantry and asking yourself what you’re really going to eat. In doing this, focus on your health and fitness goals as well. Sure, you might really eat those Oreos, but will they help you be your best self in 2019?

After checking all the expiration dates and throwing out any old food, donate the rest to your local food bank. Three Square, a food bank serving Southern Nevada, shares which foods make the best, most helpful donations.

New Year’s Resolution #2: Host a Dinner Party

Your home at One Las Vegas is perfect for hosting a dinner party and there’s no better time than 2019. Whether you want to gather your closest friends for a DIY Wine and Chocolate Party or want to host the whole company for a large event, there’s plenty of space to do it. This list of hostess do’s and don’ts answers all your questions about hosting your first, or thousandth, party.

New Year’s Resolution #3: Rid Your Wardrobe

In addition to donating food, you can also put those unworn outfits to good use. Make it a goal in 2019 to clear some space in your closet for clothes you actually love. Many fashion bloggers swear by the idea of a capsule wardrobe, which is when you buy fewer pieces that are higher quality and serve more than one purpose. With a capsule wardrobe, you have everything you need in less space.

After getting rid of all those outfits that are so last year, consider donating them to a local organization. Or, you could try your hand at selling them on secondhand websites like Poshmark, The Real Real, Tradesy, and threadUP. Some of these sites will give you serious cash for designer handbags, shoes, belts, and clothes.

New Year’s Resolution #4: Try a New DIY Home Decor Project

DIY home decor crafts are a great way to spruce up your place without having to break the bank. Even if you aren’t the crafty type, the New Year is the perfect time to try something new and add a little something special to your home. Below are some of our favorite home decor crafts that are beginner-friendly but look professional:

  • Closet Organization – Now that you have so much free space in your closet after decluttering, try some easy DIY projects to organize it, such as this small closet organizer. This project will add tons of extra space to your closet and help you organize shoes, accessories, and other essentials. Not quite so handy? These closet organization hacks will blow your mind and you can buy most of the products online.
  • Bag Rack for the Pantry – The sides and door of a pantry are often unutilized space, and you can easily change that with this super easy DIY chip rack. You can use a yardstick or trim board and little curtain clips, like these ones, to hang quite a few bags on the side for easy grabbing. Or, for those of us that are serious about our New Year’s Resolution weight loss goals, stock healthy snacks like nuts or dried fruit instead of chips.
  • Mason Jar Soap Dispenser – Mason jars are a crafter’s BFF. These jars can be used for virtually anything, including a soap dispenser! Using a steel drill bit, drill a hole to fit the width of a soap dispenser pump. You can even use pumps from old lotions or body wash.

New Year’s Resolution #5: Channel a New Style

New year, new you! We are all guilty of finding a style and sticking to it, but channeling a new interior design trend is a great way to upgrade your home without having to do a full remodel. Whether it’s trying a new mid-century modern lighting fixture or mixing a super plush sofa with a minimalistic rug, combining new styles is a great way to mix things up in 2019.

The New Year is a perfect time to implement some new changes to your home. Use this time to declutter, donate food and clothes to those less fortunate, try some new style, and gather your family and friends.
