Holiday Crafts: Unique DIY Takes on Classic Decorations

November 9, 2018

Blank craft paper and other supplies for holiday crafts.

We’ve all seen the tinsel hung, the wreath on the door, and the Christmas tree in the corner. While these classic holiday decorations may bring back a wave of nostalgia, there’s never any harm in branching out! This season, start your own tradition and make some new, unique holiday crafts.

Our Favorite DIY Holiday Decorations

A Unique Advent Calendar

Counting down the days until Santa comes with your children or grandchildren is a real treat, so this holiday season, make it even sweeter! While you can’t go wrong with the classic chocolate Advent calendars, mix it up this year with your own version of the holiday classic. You could decorate Mason jars and fill them with sweet treats or fun trinkets, you could switch up the red and green for your favorite holiday hues, or you could display your DIY holiday decoration along the mantel or across the kitchen island for a creative arrangement. The possibilities are endless when you find fun ways to countdown ‘til Christmas!

A Things Found Wreath

Rather than being made up of branches or ornaments, this holiday craft is all made out of things you likely already have! A “Things Found” wreath incorporates memories you and your family have built throughout the year, such as stray buttons that fell off your grandson’s favorite peacoat and that you never found the time to sew back on, last year’s favorite toy, and a little memento for yourself. Simply collect all these items (don’t forget to search in between the couch cushions!), glue them onto a metal hoop, and spray paint the whole thing in metallic gold. The different textures and random items will look great together and tell a story this holiday season.

An Edible Snow Globe

Not only is this holiday craft cute as a button, it’s also delicious! All you need to create your own edible snow globe is some confectioners sugar and candy decorations (you can find them in many gingerbread house kits). Not only is this DIY holiday decoration a delicious treat, but it’s also a tasteful and creative place setting for holiday dinners and can be given out as a party favor the next time you entertain in your luxury condo.

Ornament Chandelier

Many of our homes are outfitted with beautiful chandeliers, so why not make these details festive for the holiday season? By simply running a pretty ribbon through the tops of your favorite ornaments, you can display them even without a tree. If you don’t already have a chandelier in your home, you can make one with the above tutorial! This holiday craft is perfect for those that just can’t seem to get enough interior design.

Gold Stockings

Go for glam this holiday season with gold stockings, a step up from the tried-and-true plaid and red. All you need for these faux leather stockings is some fur, gold pleather, and a stencil. Spice up your holidays and upgrade your condo with this fun craft.

Creative Card Holder

This DIY holiday decoration is not only festive, but also useful! While we love the holiday cards we receive from family and friends every year, we’re not always sure where to put them! Sure, we can don the fridge in our favorites, but there are many other ways to display these holiday cards. Whether you hang your cards on a simple piece of wood with a holiday greeting written on it, make a holder out of chic chicken wire, or use a reclaimed window frame for your holiday craft, it’s sure to look beautiful in your home and help usher in the season spirit.

The sky’s the limit with DIY holiday decorations when you have a beautiful space, some creativity, and a little hot glue. There’s nothing quite like the holidays in the desert, so tackle one of these unique crafts to mix up your holiday decor this season!
